Mariner 2 and its Legacy: 50 Years On

The Mariner 2 mission to Venus, the first successful spacecraft to another planet that flew past Venus 50 years ago. it is based on research I have done on the history of the mission and how the payload and methods used to study Venus, were subsequently developed into methods for studying the Earth's weather and climate.

The Forest - Free Offer

The committee has decided to install an exiting new programme to benefit everyone who is a financial member of M.A.S. Starting this year, M.A.S. will shout each member a free weekend at The Forest. Bring your 2013-14 membership card with you when you come to a New Moon Weekend, and it will be punched, signifying that you've taken your free weekend.  Bring your equipment and observe or photograph our Forest sky which really has to be seen to be believed on a clear night. Normal cost is $15 per night or $30 per weekend per member.

Management Committee 2013-14

President: Chris Malikoff.
Vice-President: Tony Law.
Treasurer: Barry Moore.
Secretary: Jack Goralewski.
Committee Members: Stewart Grainger, Henry Swierk & Penny Reid.

The new MAS club stickers are in! We have both white on clear and black on clear. Size is 100mm x 50mm. These are great in that it doesn't matter what colour background you're placing them on - they look fantastic. Weather proof, so good for the car too. Price to members is 5 for $2.00. We will be distributing these to new members in our welcome packs from now as well. Stewart will have these for purchase at the next meeting.

Members Observing Nights

On observing nights you must arrange your own transport and arrive before sunset, to enable you to familiarise yourself with the surroundings before darkness sets in. If arriving later, make sure that your approach to the final gate is only with parking lights and ask someone to guide you into the observing area from the gate. It is essential - for your own safety and that of others - that you bring a red torch with you to observing nights.

If weather conditions look doubtful, please check this page before leaving home. If Stargard is cancelled, sometimes an unscheduled observing night will be held later that week.

Maps of our observing locations are accessed via the 'About' menu above: select 'Maps - Where To Find Us'.

During the course of the evening, please consider the needs of others around you, especially when using laser pointers, camera screens, computer monitors, car boot lights etc. Please read our Field Etiquette page.

Stargard

Stargard nights are free to members and invited guests. Please contact the President before inviting non-members. Beginners are encouraged to observe at Stargard before progressing to the Forest. Observing dates are scheduled for one Saturday of each Lunar cycle, either the week before The Forest or the week after. If a scheduled night is cancelled due to weather, another night may be selected.

The Forest

This is our premier dark-sky observing site. The dates selected are normally the Saturday closest to the New Moon.

The charge is $15.00 per member per evening, whether attending just for the evening or staying all night. Non-members who are experienced amateur astronomers may be invited to attend the Forest subject to prior clearance from the President and will be charged $20.00 per person per evening. Please see Ned Pastor or Tony Law on your arrival to make your payment and please try to have the exact amount.

Limited sleeping accommodation is available at The Forest but not guaranteed. Our rental agreement now permits us to use of the site from Friday afternoon to Monday morning. Gate opening time on Friday will be advised the day before.

Use of the site between Sunday morning and Monday morning will be dependent on the number of members each month who express a desire to attend. Members who have paid for two nights will get the third night free, i.e. the maximum cost for the weekend is $30 per member
